No fewer than 10 graduands of Veritas university, Abuja(The Catholic University of Nigeria) obtained First Class Degrees during the historic 4th and 5th combined convocation held on March 7 and 8,2017 at the campus in Abuja. Speaking during the historic ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Michael Kwanashie informed the audience that out of a total of 159 graduates, Ten obtained First Class degrees,57 graduated with Second Class,Upper division, 79 with Second Class,Lower division while only 10 candidates obtained third class degrees.
The University also graduated the pioneer set of 5 Masters Degree graduands and 4 postgraduate diploma candidates from its fledging Post Graduate College.
Professor Kwanashie,a renown Professor of Public Finance while delivering his convocation address also thank the Proprietors of the University, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria for their commitment and interest in making the University a great gift to the Nigerian Nation.
The Vice-Chancellor disclosed the decision of Senate and management of the University to establish the Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution as a national research hub, a one stop think-tank that will enhanced our country’s capacity in the promotion, tracking, management of peace as well as resolution of conflicts. The planned centre is expected to build enough capacity to institute an early warning system that will tracts conflicts and other violent unrest right from right from its embryo. The University also intends to reinvigorate the Alumni and Placement office in order for it to serve as a bridge between employers of labour and Veritas University graduates.
The convocation proper was preceded with a Convocation lecture delivered by the former Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Mr. Donald Duke. In his thought provoking lecture which had the theme “We the creatures and the Lord of all creation”, the former governor emphasized that no event in the world takes God by surprise and drew attention of the audience to some of the recent events which defied world’s expectation because God wanted things to go a different way to prove a point.
Several prizes were presented to graduands who distinguished themselves in various categories with Miss Mary Nwachukwu of the Department of Accounting emerging the overall best student of the combined 4th and 5th Convocation with the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.70.
His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Catholic Archbishop of Abuja and Chancellor of the University presided over the ceremonies, and the well-attended and colorful event also had in attendance dignitaries from all works of life including more than 50 members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria who were led to the convocation by their President, His Grace, Most Rev Ignatius Kaigama, who doubles as the Visitor to the University. The Pro Chancellor of Veritas University, His Grace, Most Rev Anthony Obinna, Vice Chancellors of other Universities, traditional rulers, political chieftains and parents of the graduands among others were very visible on the VIP dias.
