Dr. Ekwere Apkan, Mrs.
Dr. Akpan came into academic library practice in 1974 when she joined the staff of the University of Nigeria Library, Calabar campus which metamorphosed into the University of Calabar in 1976, as a cataloguer. For many years she practised as a Cataloguer, a specialty that is core to professional library practice. She started her professional education in England at the then Newcastle Upon Tyne Polytechnic now Northumbria University.She went on to obtain a Masters of Science in Library Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Information Science at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Cleveland, Ohio, USA. At CWRU, she was inducted into the Library Science Honour Society Beta Phi Mu in 1977. Dr. Akpan sharpened her management skills when she took up appointment as the Pioneer University Librarian of the University of Uyo from 1992 to 2003. Since then she has also pioneered another University library, the Cross River University of Technology (2004 – 2007) as Visiting University Librarian, before coming into the present position as the pioneer University Librarian of Veritas University in 2008, she taught Library and Information Science at the University of Uyo. Dr. Akpan has held many elective and voluntary professional responsibilities such as National Secretary, NLA Cataloguing and Classification Division 1975 – 1976 and State Chairman, Cross River State NLA 1982 – 1984, including membership of the ad hoc group of resource persons set up by the first Board of Trustees of Education Trust Fund (ETF) to
establish a road map for ETF. She has published extensively, mentored new entrants into the profession through seminars, lectures, project supervision and career counselling. She is interested in Library automation and proactive service to users.
