Veritas University students, on Wednesday, June 3, celebrated their dazzling 2-0 win over staff of the University in the maiden novelty football match in Obehie campus, Abia state.
George Okere netted the second goal after Festus Nwogu had grabbed the opener that left the staff keeper, Sorochi Okebugwu prostrating before the students strikers.
The students played with passion and pride not only to win the staff team, but to showcase their talents and ability to launch out and win laurels for the University.
The novelty match was organized by the Students Affairs unit to help in strengthening the students team for more tournaments.
The students Affairs Officer in the Registry department, Lawrence Olarubofin who led the staff team, urged the staff and students to come out and cheer their teams in the University sports ground.
Among the dignitaries that watched the novelty match were the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Professor Justin S. Ukpong, University Librarian, Dr. Mrs. Ekwere E. Akpan, Bursar, Mrs. Elizabeth I. Opara, HOD, Pure and Applied Chemistry, Dr. U.D.Akpabio, HOD, Pure and Applied Physics, Dr. Mrs. Eno E. Ituen. Students and staff of the University came out to cheer both teams.
Before the match was kicked-off by the Vice-chancellor, the central referee, Mr. Polycap N. Ikechukwu had warned the players to avoid acts that would endanger their opponents.
