VERITAS HOLDS SECOND MATRICULATION CEREMONY

Veritas University, Abuja, the Catholic University of Nigeria, on Friday, January 29, 2010 celebrated its second Matriculation ceremony in the Take-Off Campus at Obehie, Abia state.

The Ceremony started with Eucharistic celebration in the University Chapel, with the Vice-Chancellor, Very Reverend Father, Professor Justin S. Ukpong as the Chief celebrant.

After the Eucharistic celebration, the Matriculating students, Academic Staff and Principal Officers processed from the Administration block to the University Auditorium where the Vice-Chancellor addressed the students and parents before the administration of Matriculation oath.

Delivering his Matriculation address, the Vice-Chancellor told the matriculating students that it was an occasion to reflect on why they came to Veritas University, the ideals, mission and vision of the University.

“For you the older students, it is an occasion to reflect on how far you have observed and upheld the rules and regulations of the University which you promised to do at your matriculation.”

He said that the matriculation ceremony was an opportunity for parents and guardians to know about the University where their children and wards are being educated, what it stands for and what is expected of its students as well as parents and guardians.

“At Veritas University, we seek to give students a holistic education that involves physical, intellectual, moral and spiritual formation. We emphasize character formation, development of a sense of responsibility and self-reliance.”

Fr. Professor Ukpong informed the matriculating students that they were fortunate to gain admission into Veritas University and that they should see their being accepted into the University as a privileged opportunity which they must treasure and not squander.

“As you come into this University, please realize that you are coming in for serious business. There must be no lazy moments in your life on campus. In this University, there is no “African time”, you are required to attend classes regularly and in time. You must do your assignments promptly.

The Vice-Chancellor appealed to parents and guardians to ensure that their children and wards report promptly on campus on reopening dates as classes start the day after reopening, and not to invite students home during the session except for very urgent and important reasons.

Out of the 119 students that matriculated, 97 students were from the College of Management Sciences, Arts, Social Sciences and Theological Studies while 22 students came from the College of Natural and Applied Sciences.
