Recently retired Auditor General of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Mr. Chukwuma (Chuk) Okonkwo, paid a courtesy visit to the Management of Veritas University, Abuja on Tuesday, 15th June, 2021. During his visit, Mr. Okonkwo shared some of his experiences as Auditor General of AfDB with the Management team.
The Vice-Chancellor of Veritas University, Abuja, Rev. Fr. Prof. Hyacinth E. Ichoku welcomed Mr. Chukwuma Okonkwo and thanked him for taking time out to visit Veritas University to share with Management his wealth of experience at the helms of affairs as Auditor General of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Responding to the Vice-Chancellor’s welcome remarks, Mr. Chukwuma also thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception given to him. He stated that it was his first time visiting the campus and he was indeed very impressed with the serenity of the environment. He noted that he only just recently retired recently as Auditor-General of the AfDB having joined the Bank in 1996. He then proceeded to share some of his experiences with Management.
Speaking on the growth of the University, Mr. Chukwuma Okonkwo advised Management to always have a long term plan for the development of the campus. Also, while addressing the members of the Audit Unit of Veritas University, Mr. Okonkwo stressed on the need for transparency in the discharge of their duties. He noted that the biggest risk to any organization such as Veritas University was “reputation risk” and that it was very important for all stakeholders especially Management and staff to protect the reputation of Veritas University. He also advised on the need for Management to always engage qualified academic and support staff with the right work ethics suitable for a faith based institution such as Veritas University.
Speaking further, Mr. Okonkwo acknowledged the efforts of Management in adopting the option of online education due to the general insecurity in the country and during the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 and encouraged them to develop it fully. In addition he advised Management to always ensure that students receive the best experience of their lives at Veritas University. He advocated for the creation of a good database of all Alumni of Veritas University and even canvassed for the need to create an Alumni Endowment Fund which would serve as a means of the products of Veritas University to contribute to the development of their alma mater.
In concluding, the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth E. Ichoku thanked Mr. Chukwuma Okonkwo for sharing his experiences at AfDB with members of Management of Veritas University. He agreed with Mr. Okonkwo that the reputation of Veritas University was very crucial to the continued existence of the University and assured him that Management would continue to do its best to ensure that students of Veritas University are well catered to during their studies at the University, so that when are done, they leave with wonderful institutional memories that linger in their minds forever.
