Veritas University, Abuja, was founded in March 2002 by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) with the mission of providing high-quality tertiary education grounded in moral values. The university received its provisional operating license from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in May 2007, leading to the commencement of academic activities in October 2008 at its initial site in Obehie, Abia State. In 2014, VUA successfully relocated to its permanent campus in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja. The university graduated its first cohort of students in 2012 and further enhanced its academic offerings with the establishment of the School of Postgraduate Studies in 2013. In 2016, Veritas University Abuja was formally granted its permanent license by the NUC, solidifying its status as a recognized institution of higher learning. A notable milestone was achieved during the 2020/2021 academic session with the launch of the Faculty of Law, culminating in the official commissioning of its dedicated building, the Justice Chike Idigbe Faculty of Law, in May 2023. In the 2022/2023 session, Veritas University Abuja expanded its academic portfolio by introducing the Faculty of Health Sciences, which initially offered programs in Nursing and Medical Laboratory Science. This expansion was complemented by the formal approval of the College of Medicine in November 2023, allowing the Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) program to begin in the 2023/2024 session.

Founded on Catholic values, Veritas University is built on truth, learning and service. Our legacy continues to shape minds and inspire purpose.
To create a dynamic Catholic University for academic and moral excellence and to advance the truth to every generation.
A continuous quest for truth through research, preservation and communication of knowledge for the good of society. This it shall do with the specific characteristics and purpose of Veritas University (Ex Corde Eccleisiae No. 30).
Veritas University is founded on the philosophy that all knowledge originates from God and that knowledge is power. Consequently, knowledge will be disseminated to individuals without let or hindrance. The University is an apex institution that is intellectually stimulating for the advancement of knowledge and truth. The University will continue to strive to provide a well-balanced and creative education that seeks to impart to its students a sense of self-actualization and entrepreneurial knowledge, leading to the production of well-motivated and self-reliant graduates. The philosophy of the Veritas University is in consonance with the challenge posed by the Second Vatican Council for Institutions of Higher Learning requiring higher institutions “to put forth every effort so that the Christian (human) mind may achieve a public, persistent, universal presence in the whole enterprise of advancing higher culture” (Gravissimum educationis, n.10).

When the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria resolved, in 2002, to establish a university, the intention was not simply to add another institution to the nation’s higher-education landscape. It was to build a place where the pursuit of knowledge and the formation of character are held as one purpose, where young Nigerians are equipped not only to succeed, but to lead with integrity. That conviction, captured in our motto Seeking the Truth, remains the measure of everything we do. Two decades on, Veritas University has grown from its first cohort into a community of more than eight thousand undergraduate and a thousand postgraduate students, taught across faculties spanning the sciences, medicine, law, engineering, management, the humanities and theology.
