The Department of Educational Foundations was one of the three pioneer departments in the Faculty of Education, created in February 2015 during the 2014/2015 academic session with eight students for the bachelor’s degree programme. The Department offers courses leading to the award of the B.Ed. Degree in Educational Management, M.Ed. Degree in Educational Management, Ph.D. Degree in Educational Management, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). The Educational Management programme is not only a specialist programme in the traditional sense, but also an applied programme designed to meet the needs and aspirations of the nation. The programmes are based on the National Universities Commission (NUC) BMAS and CCMAS standards for Nigerian universities. The vision of the Department is to prepare students to succeed in a transnational world and meet the demands for a well-educated workforce, independent, creative, and compassionate teachers, counsellors, librarians, and educational leaders through quality teaching and research with both local and global reach. The mission of the Department is to create and sustain, in commitment to the academic ideal of excellent scholarly and scientific practice, an environment within which knowledge can be discovered, shared, and applied for the benefit of the community and the nation, while also building a learning community dedicated to spiritual vitality. The philosophy of Educational Management is centered on the acquisition of appropriate managerial skills, abilities, and competencies that enable prospective educational managers to better understand human behavior and interrelationships. The B.Ed. Degree programme is an amalgamation of courses in Educational Administration and Educational Planning. The merger of these courses resulted in the EDM code used throughout the programme where relevant, covering both Educational Administration and Planning. In line with the National Policy on Education, the programme promotes the acquisition, development, and inculcation of proper value orientation for the survival of individuals and society, the development of intellectual capacities to understand and appreciate the environment, the acquisition of physical and intellectual skills necessary for becoming useful members of society, and the development of an objective understanding of local and external environments. The objectives of the programme include producing prospective teachers and educational managers with strong leadership qualities based on Catholic orientation, producing graduates who are competent as teachers and managers of educational organizations, enhancing the productivity and relevance of education through professional management, promoting enquiry, creativity, and entrepreneurship in teaching through leadership by example, motivating personnel across the education sector, preparing graduates for leadership roles within and outside the education sector, and producing the manpower required in Ministries of Education, educational agencies, and institutions at all levels. The programme possesses several unique features. It is Information Technology-driven, combines cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains, and is practically oriented through practicum and laboratory demonstrations. It also integrates theory with practice, adopts a triangulation of double specialization involving Educational Management with subjects in Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts, and emphasizes both Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Intelligence (EI). Graduates of the programme are expected to possess employability skills relevant to the 21st-century workplace, including transformational leadership skills, flexibility in decision-making, managerial competencies in classroom and school administration, adherence to the rule of law in workplace relationships, fairness and equity in decision-making, rationality in administration, emotional intelligence in professional interactions, and the application of Information Technology in administrative and management tasks. The programme also develops important 21st-century skills such as interpersonal skills, planning skills, team-building abilities, communication and decision-making skills, digital literacy, application of Information Technology in management, and Emotional Intelligence competencies.
