Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy continues to distinguish itself through academic excellence, intellectual engagement, and outstanding student achievements within and beyond the University. Its students consistently demonstrate the analytical depth, persuasive communication, and ethical reasoning that define philosophical education. The Department emerged as the winner of the 2024/2025 Vice-Chancellor's Inter-Department Debate Championship hosted by Veritas University. Represented by Joan Heart and Moses Mirabel, the team secured the championship title through exceptional critical thinking, sound argumentation, and outstanding public speaking skills. The Department also gained international recognition in December 2025 when Joan Heart represented both Veritas University and Nigeria at the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) in Bulgaria. Competing against some of the world's finest university debaters, she finished among the Top 10 Public Speakers, reflecting the Department's commitment to developing graduates capable of competing successfully on the global stage. Beyond the classroom, students actively participate in debates, conferences, seminars, public lectures, and academic forums that promote independent inquiry and engagement with contemporary philosophical issues. These activities strengthen research skills, critical analysis, logical reasoning, and effective communication while complementing classroom learning. The Department also encourages students to undertake research on contemporary issues in ethics, politics, religion, technology, science, society, and African Philosophy through scholarly discussions and research projects. This culture of inquiry equips graduates to apply philosophical thinking to real-world challenges across diverse professional fields. Graduates of the Department continue to excel in leadership, public service, education, law, media, diplomacy, and other professions where sound judgment, ethical leadership, and critical thinking are essential. The Department remains committed to producing graduates who combine intellectual excellence with integrity and a strong commitment to service.

Program Overview & Admission Information
Eligibility Criteria
Admission into the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Philosophy is merit-based. Candidates may gain admission through three primary modes:
A. Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
Requirements:
ā A minimum of five (5) credit passes in relevant SSCE (WAEC/NECO) or GCE subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings.
ā A minimum score of 180 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
ā Process: Candidates must meet the University's approved JAMB cut-off mark 170 and successfully participate in the University's admission screening exercise before being offered admission.
B. Direct Entry (DE)
Candidates seeking admission into the 200 Level of the programme must possess the minimum O' Level requirements stated above, in addition to one of the following:
ā Advanced Level (A-Level) passes in two relevant subjects.
ā A recognized JUPEB qualification.
ā A recognized IJMB qualification.
ā A First Degree in a related discipline from a recognized university.
Students admitted through Direct Entry are required to register for all prescribed 200 Level courses in the programme. They shall also take any 100 Level departmental courses that were not covered in their previous programme, as determined by the Department.
C. Inter-University Transfer
Students from recognized universities may apply for transfer into the Department of Philosophy, subject to the University's transfer policy and the equivalence of previous academic work.
Requirements:
ā A minimum CGPA of 1.5 on a 4-point grading scale or 1.8 on a 5-point grading scale from the former institution.
ā Submission of the University's Inter-University Transfer application form through the Admissions Office.
ā Satisfaction of the Department that the applicant has met the minimum academic requirements for admission into the programme.
Successful transfer candidates may be admitted into 100 or 200 Level, depending on the Department's evaluation of their academic record. All transfer students are required to complete the prescribed 200 Level courses of the programme.

Completion Requirements
Completion Requirements (Graduation)
To be awarded the Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons.) in Philosophy, students are expected to satisfy the academic and ethical requirements of Veritas University.
Academic Standing
ā Successfully complete all prescribed departmental, General Studies (GES), and elective courses.
ā Maintain the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) required by the University's academic regulations for graduation.
Research Project
ā Successfully complete and defend the compulsory final-year research project (Long Essay).
Attendance
ā Maintain the minimum (80%) attendance requirement stipulated by the University to qualify for continuous assessment and final examinations.
Character and Conduct
ā Demonstrate good moral character and adhere to the University's rules, regulations, and code of conduct throughout the period of study, including strict compliance with policies on academic integrity and examination ethics.
