At the heart of Veritas University, Abuja—the Catholic University of Nigeria—lies a commitment not only to academic excellence but also to the formation of morally upright, intellectually grounded, and socially responsible individuals. The Department of Religions and Intercultural Studies (RIS) embodies this vision by offering an undergraduate programme that goes beyond conventional classroom learning to shape students into thoughtful leaders and global citizens. The Department began as a programme under the Department of Philosophy in the then College of Humanities during the 2016/2017 academic session. On March 30, 2017, at the 70th Senate Meeting, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Kwanashie, formally separated it into an independent department. Since its establishment, the Department has been committed to delivering a high-quality humanistic education that fosters critical thinking, analytical ability, and creativity, equipping students to thrive in a diverse and rapidly globalising world. In recognition of its evolving scope, the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the change of its name from “Religious Studies” to “Religions and Intercultural Studies” on May 16, 2022. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree programme in Religions and Intercultural Studies (RIS) is carefully designed to help students understand one of the most powerful forces shaping human existence—religion—and its deep connection with culture, identity, human society, and development. In a world increasingly defined by diversity, conflict, and global interaction, this programme equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to interpret, engage, and transform complex human realities. Students explore Africa’s major religious traditions: Traditional African Religion, Islam, and Christianity alongside global religions, cultures and their ethical systems. This is done with the aim to appreciate the role of religion in cultural relations, politics, development, conflict, peacebuilding, humanitarian aid, and international relations. Choosing to study Religions and Intercultural Studies at Veritas University, Abuja is more than an academic decision—it is a commitment to understanding humanity, promoting peace, and contributing to a better world. Here, students are not only taught what to think, but more importantly, how to think, how to engage, and how to lead with integrity. Apply today and take the first step toward becoming a global thinker, a culturally sensitive mediator, and a leader of conscience.
