Banking and Finance

The Department of Finance at Veritas University Abuja is committed to producing competent financial professionals, banking experts, entrepreneurs, and business leaders equipped with the knowledge, practical skills, and ethical values required to excel in today's dynamic financial environment. The programme prepares students for careers in banking, investment, corporate finance, financial consulting, entrepreneurship, and advanced academic studies. Established during the University's academic restructuring in the 2014/2015 academic session, the programme was initially housed within the Department of Business Administration before becoming an independent department following its successful accreditation in 2019. Since then, the Department has continued to maintain high academic standards in line with the requirements of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The curriculum is designed to combine sound theoretical knowledge with practical learning experiences that prepare students for the realities of the global financial industry. Students acquire competencies in corporate finance, investment analysis, financial planning and budgeting, banking operations, risk management, financial markets and institutions, business decision-making, entrepreneurship, and the application of mathematical and statistical techniques in financial analysis. The programme is developed in accordance with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) and aligns with the professional requirements of recognized bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and the Chartered Institute of Finance and Control of Nigeria (CIFCN). This provides students with a strong foundation for pursuing professional certifications while completing their degree. The Department is committed to developing well-rounded graduates who combine academic excellence with integrity, discipline, critical thinking, and self-reliance. Its vision is to be a programme of international standard where knowledge is created, developed, and sustained through excellence for the benefit of humanity. Its mission is to provide quality teaching, research, and professional training while equipping students with practical problem-solving skills, sound financial decision-making abilities, and a clear understanding of the economic, environmental, and social factors that influence business and financial decisions. Graduates of the programme are prepared for careers in commercial and investment banking, financial institutions, insurance companies, capital markets, corporate finance, financial consulting, government agencies, financial technology (FinTech) companies, development organizations, entrepreneurship, and business management. The programme also provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate studies and professional qualifications. The objectives of the programme are to provide students with a broad understanding of finance and banking within both local and global contexts, develop graduates capable of analysing financial issues and making informed business decisions, prepare students for successful careers in the public and private sectors, promote entrepreneurship and innovation, and equip graduates for lifelong learning and professional development. Beyond the classroom, the Department promotes experiential learning through educational excursions and industry engagement. In June 2025, students visited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Stock Exchange, where they gained practical exposure to monetary policy, financial regulation, banking operations, capital market activities, investment analysis, and portfolio management. These experiences bridge the gap between theory and practice, giving students firsthand insight into the financial sector while preparing them for successful professional careers. Guided by the University's Catholic tradition and commitment to holistic education, the Department continues to produce graduates who are professionally competent, ethically responsible, and well prepared to contribute meaningfully to society.
