The Department of Economics is one of the foundational academic units of Veritas University Abuja. It began in 2008 as part of the Department of Management and Social Sciences under the former College of Management, Social Sciences, Arts and Theological Studies (MSAT). Following the restructuring of the department in the 2010/2011 academic session, the Department of Economics was established as an independent department, with Prof. Cyril S. Ige serving as the pioneer Head of Department. The Department offers a rigorous and rewarding four-year programme leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics. The programme is designed to provide students with strong academic and professional foundations that prepare them for leadership and managerial responsibilities in both the public and private sectors. The Department is committed to producing graduates equipped with analytical, quantitative, and critical thinking skills necessary for understanding and addressing socio-economic challenges. The philosophy of the programme is centered on developing graduates who can analyze economic issues using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, communicate economic ideas effectively, and apply economic principles to real-world problems. Through teaching, research, and practical learning, students are trained to think critically, formulate economic policies, and contribute meaningfully to national and global development.
