Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry at Veritas University Abuja, within the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, is dedicated to the study of chemical processes in living organisms. It provides high-quality education and research training focused on understanding the molecular basis of life, health, and disease. Through a curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory experience, the Department equips students with the skills needed for careers in biomedical sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, environmental science, and related fields. The Department covers major areas such as molecular biology, clinical and industrial biochemistry, bioinformatics, pharmacology, forensic and analytical biochemistry, enzymology, nutritional biochemistry, and biotechnology. Its research focuses on natural products, metabolic disorders, toxicology, and disease mechanisms, contributing to scientific advancement and societal development. The programme aims to produce highly skilled graduates with strong analytical, laboratory, and research competencies, while promoting innovation, critical thinking, and ethical conduct. In line with the University’s values, the Department fosters integrity, leadership, and intellectual growth, preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to national and global development. The vision of the Department is to become a leading center of excellence in biochemistry, research, and innovation, producing globally competitive graduates with strong scientific and ethical foundations. Its mission is to provide quality education through effective teaching, practical training, and innovative research, while developing professionals who can contribute to healthcare, environmental sustainability, and scientific advancement. The philosophy of the programme emphasizes a balanced integration of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research, with a focus on solving biological, medical, and environmental challenges. Accordingly, the programme equips students with a strong foundation in biochemical principles, laboratory techniques, and analytical methods, while developing critical thinking, research capability, and problem-solving skills. Graduates are prepared for postgraduate studies and professional careers, with the ability to apply biochemical knowledge in medicine, agriculture, nutrition, environmental management, and biotechnology, while upholding high ethical and professional standards.

Program Overview & Admission Information

Eligibility Criteria
Admission into the Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Biochemistry is merit-based. Candidates may enter through three primary modes: A. Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) • Requirement: Minimum of five (5) credit passes in SSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB, obtained in not more than two sittings. • Compulsory Subjects: English Language, and Mathematics. • Other Subjects: Three other relevant Science subjects. • Process: Must make an acceptable cut-off mark in the JAMB UTME and pass the University's post-UTME screening. Direct Entry (DE) • Requirement: Five O-Level credits (including English and Mathematics) PLUS one of the following: o Advanced Level (A-Level) passes in two relevant subjects (Chemistry and Physics) o Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB) qualification. o National Certificate in Education (NCE) with merit/distinction in relevant subjects. o National Diploma (ND) with Upper Credit or Higher National Diploma (HND) with Lower Credit in a related field. o A first degree in a related area from a recognized university. Inter-University Transfer Candidates from other recognized universities may transfer into 100 or 200 level, subject to him/her meeting admission criteria’s.

  • Pay the application fee as indicated on the portal.
Completion Requirements
To earn the B.Sc. (Honours) degree, a student must demonstrate both academic competence and moral integrity: • Credit Units: o UTME Students (4 Years): Minimum of 155 credit units o Direct Entry Students (3 Years): 128 credit units • Academic Standing: A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 on a 5-point scale. • Project: Successful completion and defence of a final year Research Project (6 Credit Units). • Attendance: Mandatory 80% attendance in all registered courses to be eligible for examinations. • Ethical Conduct: Adherence to the University's code of conduct, including the matriculation oath and zero tolerance for examination misconduct or plagiarism.
