The Department of Theology at Veritas University Abuja, established in 2019, is an integral part of the Faculty of Theology and reflects the University’s commitment to holistic theological education. Its establishment aligns with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) and the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), which emphasize a comprehensive study of religious phenomena in relation to human life, including its historical, social, ethical, and cultural dimensions. The Department also offers Ecclesiastical Degrees, approved by the Dicastery for Culture and Education in Vatican City in 2022, providing students with a refined and contemporary theological formation grounded in faith, doctrine, morals, and the social teachings of the Church. The mission of the Department is to guide students in interpreting, understanding, and reasoning within the context of their faith, while engaging them in comprehensive undergraduate studies across key areas of Catholic Theology. These include Scripture, Church history and doctrine, moral theology, and the relationship of the Church with other disciplines such as science, education, law, and medicine. Anchored on the University’s motto, “Seeking the Truth,” the programme develops critical thinking, intellectual independence, and lifelong engagement with theological study, while remaining faithful to the Gospel, Church Tradition, and the Magisterium. The Department fosters an academic environment that promotes the interaction between faith and reason, Gospel and culture, and Christian thought and modern sciences. It equips students with a solid foundation in contemporary theology rooted in the Catholic tradition, while remaining open to insights from other Christian and non-Christian perspectives. Through this approach, students develop the capacity for independent study, a deeper understanding of the Christian faith, and the ability to relate theological concepts to real-life situations and societal challenges. Graduates of the programme are well-prepared for diverse paths, including academic careers, priestly or religious formation, and professional roles within Church-related and secular institutions. They are equipped to serve as theologians, educators, counselors, and religious instructors across sectors such as education, healthcare, public service, and media. Ultimately, the Department seeks to form individuals who are intellectually grounded, spiritually mature, and capable of contributing meaningfully to the Church and society
