Nursing Sciences

The Department of Nursing Science at Veritas University Abuja is a key unit within the Faculty of Health Sciences, alongside Medical Laboratory Science. The Department is committed to excellence in nursing education, research, and community service, with a focus on addressing healthcare needs in Nigeria and beyond. Its philosophy goes beyond technical proficiency to cultivate well-rounded graduates with clinical expertise, compassion, and a strong commitment to ethical practice. Guided by the University’s mission to integrate academic excellence with Christian values, the programme combines rigorous academic training with practical experience, producing professionals who serve with integrity and contribute to healthcare development both nationally and globally. In line with the University’s mission, the Department aims to train versatile nurses who can function effectively both independently and collaboratively as leaders in a dynamic healthcare environment. It provides a solid foundation for holistic, evidence-based practice within a professional community, while promoting scholarly teaching, research, and continuous development to maintain competence. The vision of the Department is to deliver a high-quality professional education that equips graduates to promote, maintain, and restore the health of individuals and communities through evidence-based practice, both now and in the future. The Department is guided by core values of empathy, care, compassion, integrity, trustworthiness, justice, and responsiveness, which underpin both academic and professional conduct. Its overall aim is to advance the education of nurses for modern-day practice by maintaining high academic standards that meet national and international requirements, while providing a supportive learning environment for effective nursing practice. The programme is designed to produce professional nurses capable of delivering high-quality care to individuals and communities across diverse cultural and social settings. It emphasizes teamwork in both teaching and service delivery, supported by the use of technology for optimal outcomes. The Department also promotes continuous professional development through training programmes for faculty and practicing nurses, while mentoring students into leadership roles through active participation in academic and professional activities. In addition, students are guided to develop strong problem-solving abilities and research skills through exposure to practical challenges and supervised research projects.

Program Overview & Admission Information

Eligibility Criteria
Admission of students is guided by the University, JAMB, NUC, N&MCN and West Africa Health Examination Board (WAHEB) admissions criteria. U.M.E entry qualification. The requirements for admission into the B.N.Sc programme shall be a minimum of five (5) O'level credit passes in Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) West African Examination Council (WAEC), General Certificate Examination (GCE), National Examination Council(NECO) or NABTEB in the following subjects at not more than two (2) sitting: Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics. - A combination of results from WAEC and NECO is acceptable but cannot be combined with any other. - The O'level results must pre-date admission - An acceptable score in Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Direct entry (i) Graduates of first degree in the Life or Biological Sciences or any other related courses (e.g. Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy etc.) at not lower than a Second Class shall be deemed to be qualified and can only be considered in 200 level. (ii) Registered Nurse Diploma Certificate (RN) of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (Note: Not Registered Midwives (RM), and in addition hold GCE/SSCE/WASC or its equivalent: with credit in at least 5 subjects (at not more than two sittings) including English Language, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. (iii) Candidates holding the Advanced level General Certificate of Education (GCE) with passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, in not more than two sittings are also eligible to apply. Such candidates will be expected to have satisfied the O' level requirements of five credit passes in at least five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry in not more than two sittings and passed the university screening test. Direct Entry candidates admitted into a four-year programme may be required, where applicable, to take specified courses to make up for deficiencies found in their academic background.

  • Pay the application fee as indicated on the portal.
Completion Requirements
Transfers from other Faculties Candidates may transfer into B.N.Sc. programme from other relevant faculties provided they are in their 200 Level and have passed all courses in their first year and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point average of 3.50. The student must have offered and passed all GS courses offered by BNSc. Nursing students at 100 level Expected Duration - 5 years Degree conferred - B.NSc. Other Professional Certificate: - Registered Nursing Certificate - Registered Midwifery Certificate - Public Health Nursing Certificate
