Pharmacognosy

The Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy is dedicated to the scientific discovery and study of bioactive compounds and medicines derived from natural sources such as plants, animals, minerals, and microorganisms, as well as their application in modern and traditional healthcare systems through phytotherapy. In response to the growing global interest in green medicine, the Department bridges the gap between traditional medicine and pharmaceutical science by combining indigenous knowledge with modern scientific research and healthcare practices. The Department provides a stimulating learning and research environment where “nature meets science” for the advancement of human health. With a team of experienced academic staff and researchers specializing in Pharmacognosy, Phytotherapy, Plant Science, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, students are exposed to both theoretical knowledge and practical training through laboratory work, field studies, and research projects. Modern laboratories and access to medicinal plant resources further support teaching, innovation, and advanced natural product research. The Department’s academic and research activities focus on medicinal plant research and natural product drug discovery, phytotherapy and herbal medicine development, ethnopharmacology, ethnobotany, and the conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants. Through these focus areas, the Department seeks to scientifically validate the efficacy and safety of indigenous medicinal plants, promote evidence-based herbal medicine development, and contribute to the integration of traditional medicine into modern healthcare systems. The Department is also committed to producing highly skilled graduates equipped with the knowledge and competencies required for careers in academia, pharmaceutical industries, regulatory agencies, and research institutions. In addition, it promotes innovation, sustainability, biodiversity preservation, and collaborative research partnerships at both local and international levels.
