Guidance and Counselling

The Department of Guidance and Counselling is one of the four departments in the Faculty of Education, Veritas University Abuja. Guidance and Counselling existed as a unit under the Department of Educational Foundations since the establishment of the Faculty of Education in the 2014/2015 academic session. In response to the growing needs of students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the University Senate approved it as a full-fledged department in the 2024/2025 academic session, and the Department commenced operations in November 2025. The Department currently offers a four-year undergraduate programme leading to the award of the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in Guidance and Counselling, as well as postgraduate programmes leading to the award of Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Guidance and Counselling. The overall objective of the Department is to produce highly motivated and professionally competent teachers and counsellors for schools, educational institutions, and other establishments in Nigeria and beyond. The Department also conducts research on the impact of education on the social, economic, political, and cultural development of Nigeria. The programmes are based on the National Universities Commission (NUC) Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS). To ensure the production of motivated and well-trained counsellors, the curriculum is designed to be relevant to the needs of students. It is character-based, life-oriented, learner-centred, practical, and contextually appropriate. Counselling is viewed as a helping profession that promotes support, trust, and effective counsellor-client relationships, while emphasizing learning, guidance, self-discovery, insight, clarity, growth, and emotional stability. The vision of the Department is to prepare students to succeed in a transnational world and meet the demands for a well-educated workforce by producing independent, creative, and compassionate counsellors, teachers, and educational leaders through quality teaching and research with both local and global relevance. The mission of the Department is to create and sustain an environment of excellent scholarly and scientific practice where knowledge can be discovered, shared, and applied for the benefit of the community and the nation. The Department is also committed to building a learning community dedicated to emotional support, empathy, emotional intelligence, peaceful coexistence, and spiritual vitality. The philosophy of the B.Ed. Guidance and Counselling programme is derived from the philosophy of education as contained in the National Policy on Education, which envisions a free and democratic society, a just and egalitarian society, a united and self-reliant nation, a great and dynamic economy, and a land of bright opportunities for all citizens. Based on these ideals, the programme seeks to promote respect for the worth and dignity of the individual, faith in humanity’s ability to make rational decisions, and the development of moral and spiritual values in interpersonal and human relations. It also encourages respect for the dignity of labour and the promotion of the emotional, physical, and psychological well-being of all individuals. Furthermore, the programme emphasizes shared responsibility for the common good of society, the inculcation of national consciousness and unity, and the development of the right values and attributes necessary for individual and societal survival. The programme is also designed to train the mind to understand the world, develop appropriate skills, abilities, and competencies, and equip students to contribute meaningfully to the development of society. It promotes the acquisition and development of proper value orientation, the enhancement of intellectual capacities to understand and appreciate the environment, and the cultivation of an objective understanding of both local and global environments.

Completion Requirements
Graduation Requirements Course System All Education programmes shall be run on a modularized system commonly referred to as Course Unit System. All courses should therefore be sub-divided into more or less self-sufficient and logically consistent packages that are taught within a semester and examined at the end of that particular semester. Credit weights in form of units should be attached to each course Units Consist of a specified number of student-teacher contact hours per week per semester. Units are used in two complementary ways: one, as a measure of course weighting, and the other, as an indicator of student workload. (i) As a measure of course weighting for each Unit course (e.g.) HIS 105, ZOO 203, ARCH 504), the credit unit to be earned for satisfactorily completing the course is specified; e.g. a 2-credit unit course may mean two 1-hour lecture per week per semester or one 1-hour lecture plus 3-hour practical per week per semester. (ii) As a measure of workload, “One Credit Unit” means one hour of lecture or one hour of tutorial per week per semester. For other forms of teaching requiring student-teacher contact, the following equivalents may apply: two hours of the seminar: three hours of laboratory or fieldwork, Clinical practice/practicum, studio practice or stadium sporting activity, six hours of teaching practice; four weeks of industrial attachment where applicable Procedure of Registration At the beginning of every semester, all students are required to follow procedures by the Examination and Records Unit of the Registry and register online and manually for all their courses for that semester. A student is not fully registered for an academic session unless and until these online and manual procedures have been completed within a prescribed period. Any student who fails to register within four weeks of the beginning of the session shall not be allowed to register for that session anymore. The candidate admitted to the 100 level of study, or through Direct Entry into the 200 level who fails to register by the period stipulated in the admission letter will be deemed to have declined his/her admission. Any student who is absent for the two semesters of a session shall be deemed to have voluntarily withdrawn from the university and shall forfeit the benefit of taking any examinations in any semester of that session. In addition, such a student shall be re-admitted in a subsequent session only with the approval of the Senate. Mentors/Advisers Every level of study is assigned an academic adviser in the Department. Advisers are expected to be conversant with each student at the level and be able to advise them on course registration as well as mentor their progress through the years. Students should therefore feel free to approach their level advisers when necessary Late Registration Students who do not register at the appropriate time will be fined according to the University’s policy for the semester. Course Credit System The University operates a “course credit system”. This is a quantitative system of organizing the curriculum in which subject areas are broken down into examinable units. Courses are assigned weights called credits. E.g.-two credit units mean two hours of lecture a week per semester. Students earn credits accordingly for satisfactory passing of courses at the end of the semester. Students’ scores are assigned grades and grade points. Attendance to Classes While students are free to choose their programme of study, they are bound to attain 80% attendance to course lessons for their programmes. Therefore, if for any reason a student has to be absent from class, he/she is advised to obtain permission and a signed exeat with the consent of the Head of Department who shall, in turn, inform the course lecturers. Excess Credit Units Final year students can apply to the senate through their Head of Department and Dean to carry an excess of 6 credit units if that will facilitate their graduation within a given academic session by completing the ‘Excess credit unit’ form. Probation and Withdrawal Following the guidelines on grading and degree classification based on a 5-point scale, the CGPA shall be used as a guide for advising probation and/or withdrawal of students. Probation A student whose CGPA is below 1.5 at the end of a particular session shall earn probation for one academic session. Withdrawal A student whose CGPA is below 1.5 at the end of probation shall be required to withdraw from the university. Early Attrition Where a student has demonstrated poor performance with a CGPA of less than 1.5 in the first and second semesters of 100 level, the student should be advised to withdraw from the programme. The student may then be considered for a change of programme within the university. Techniques of Student Assessment Grading system Grade Points (GP), Grade Point Average (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) To arrive at the final grade, the evaluation must be a continuous process consisting of some or all of the following where applicable: (i) Intra-semester examination or exercises (ii) Assignments and/or presentations (iii) Seminar papers (iv) End-of-semester examination A letter grade and numerical point are awarded to each student based on his/her total scores on all the evaluation criteria. The final marks scored by a student and the corresponding letter grades and the numerical points are indicated. The following are possible final marks and their corresponding letter grades and grade points: Table 1: Marks and corresponding letter grades and grade points Marks % Letter Grade Grade point (GP) 70 -100 A 5 60 – 69 B 4 50 – 59 C 3 45 – 49 D 2 00 - 44 F 0 The grade point (GP) derives from the actual percentage raw score for a given course. The raw score is converted into a letter grade and grade point. For example, a score of 60 attracts the letter B whose grade point is 4. The grade point average (GPA) is the indices for reporting students’ performance in course evaluation. It is achieved by calculating the weighted grades earned in the courses taken during the semester. The grade point obtained in each course is multiplied by the number of credit units assigned to that course and then summed up and dividing them by the total number of credit units registered for the semester. GPA = Sum of credit units for a course corresponding GP gained Sum of credit units registered   From the second semester of study in the University, the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is the form taken by students’ performance reports. The (CGPA) is the up-to-date means of grade points earned by a student from semester to semester. CGPA = Sum of GP gained at all levels = CGP Sum of CU registered at all levels CTCR Continuous Assessment Regulation Continuous Assessment (CA) is conducted regularly. It carries a weight of 30% of the semester’s examination. Examinations Regulations governing the conduct of Continuous Assessments and Semester Examinations are reviewed from time to time. Requirement for taking examinations To be admitted to the university examination, the student MUST: • Have duly registered for the course • Follow the approved course of study for a prescribed period • Have paid all prescribed fees by the senate as and when required • Satisfy 80% attendance at lectures • Comply with any additional requirements approved by the senate from time to time.
