Science Education

The Department of Science Education is a dynamic academic unit within the Faculty of Education committed to the training and development of highly qualified, innovative, and professionally competent science educators. Established in the 2016/2017 academic session, the Department has continued to grow academically and professionally, producing graduates who excel in teaching, research, innovation, and leadership. The Department provides students with strong theoretical knowledge, practical teaching skills, research competence, and technological expertise required to meet the growing demands of science and technology education in Nigeria and beyond. Since its establishment, the Department has recorded remarkable academic achievements, including the graduation of several First-Class students and producing the University Valedictorian of the 2020 graduation set. These accomplishments reflect the Department’s commitment to academic excellence, discipline, innovation, and quality teaching. The Department emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community service while preparing graduates who can contribute meaningfully to national development through science education. Through modern instructional approaches, ICT-driven learning, and practical laboratory experiences, students are equipped with the skills required for effective teaching, critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning. The Department currently offers undergraduate programmes in Chemistry Education, Physics Education, and Computer Science Education. These programmes are carefully designed to combine subject mastery with professional pedagogical training in line with global best practices in education and emerging technologies. The Head of Department, Dr. Francis Ojo, welcomes students and visitors to the Department of Science Education, emphasizing the Department’s commitment to producing competent, innovative, and research-driven science educators equipped to excel in teaching, research, and professional practice. The Department is committed to providing quality education through experienced academic staff, modern teaching methods, practical laboratory experiences, and technology-driven learning environments. Its programmes are structured to develop critical thinking, creativity, leadership, and scientific inquiry among students while encouraging academic excellence, integrity, and innovation in preparation for meaningful contributions to society and the advancement of science education nationally and globally. The Department offers undergraduate programmes including B.Sc. Ed. Chemistry Education, B.Sc. Ed. Physics Education, and B.Sc. Ed. Computer Science Education. The Chemistry Education programme prepares students with comprehensive knowledge of chemistry and professional teaching skills required for effective science instruction, with emphasis on laboratory practicals, scientific research, and innovative teaching methodologies. The Physics Education programme equips students with sound knowledge of physics concepts, experimental techniques, and pedagogical competencies necessary for effective teaching and scientific problem-solving while training students to apply physics principles to real-world challenges and technological advancement. The Computer Science Education programme combines computer science knowledge with educational methodologies to prepare graduates for careers in teaching, ICT, software applications, and educational technology while equipping students with practical computing skills, programming knowledge, and modern digital competencies relevant to today’s technological world. The Department of Science Education is equipped with facilities that support effective teaching, learning, and research, including well-equipped science laboratories, ICT-enabled classrooms, computer laboratories, educational resource centers, research and innovation facilities, departmental library resources, and internet-enabled learning environments. The vision of the Department is to become a leading Department in Science Education recognized for academic excellence, innovative research, and the production of globally competitive science educators. Its mission is to provide quality science education through effective teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement while producing graduates with strong professional ethics, scientific competence, and technological skills. The Department offers experienced and dedicated academic staff, practical and research-based learning, ICT-driven teaching and learning, a strong foundation in science and pedagogy, opportunities for innovation and professional development, and preparation for careers in teaching, research, and industry. Graduates of the Department of Science Education can pursue careers as Professional Teachers and Educators, Researchers and Academics, Laboratory Technologists, Curriculum Developers, ICT and Computer Professionals, Educational Consultants, Science Communicators, and Government and Private Sector Professionals.

Program Overview & Admission Information

Eligibility Criteria
General Admission Requirements Candidates seeking admission into any programme in the Department of Science Education must satisfy the minimum university admission requirements and possess acceptable scores in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Applicants must obtain at least five (5) credit passes in relevant subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB in not more than two sittings. English Language and Mathematics are compulsory for all programmes. Programme-Specific Requirements B.Sc. Ed. Chemistry Education UTME Requirements Candidates must possess five (5) credit passes including: • English Language • Mathematics • Chemistry • Physics • One other relevant science subject Direct Entry Requirements Candidates may be admitted through Direct Entry with any of the following qualifications: • National Certificate in Education (NCE) with merit in relevant science subjects • National Diploma (ND) in relevant disciplines • IJMB or Advanced Level passes in Chemistry and related science subjects • Any other equivalent qualification approved by the University B.Sc. Ed. Physics Education UTME Requirements Candidates must possess five (5) credit passes including: • English Language • Mathematics • Physics • Chemistry • One other relevant science subject Direct Entry Requirements Candidates may qualify through Direct Entry with: • NCE with merit in Physics or related science subjects • ND in relevant science programmes • IJMB or Advanced Level passes in Physics and Mathematics • Any approved equivalent qualification
